Art and Remembrance, Islington Central Library Me-mo-ran-da takes the form of an audio CD that weaves together 12 songs from the Second World War era sung by local choirs and the stories of survivors of wartime from in and around Islington. The CD is the result of several months work with several old people's organisations, community choirs and schools in the London borough. The work was commissioned by ArtOffice and includes contributions from members of The London Gay Men's Chorus, Age Concern Islington and Islington Choral Society. Click here for exhibition flyer Click here to listen to an mp3 sample of track 1 from the CD (please note this is low quality for download speed) This project is part of the Islington Green Interaction Programme, which runs parallel to the commissioning of the new war memorial and the re-landscaping of Islington Green designed by J&L Gibbons LLP. -
Seven Seven Contemporary
Arts This installation resulted from a collaborative project between the artist and a group of students from B6 Sixth Form College, Brooke House, Hackney, East London. Objects were animated by concealing speakers within them and giving them each a voice – a travel bag stuffed with maps talked about emigrating from the Congo to London, a broken chair complains of how tired it is and pleads for no one on sit on it, an answer phone clicks on and barks out a hammer horror style warning message… these and more combine to create unnerving, touching and sometimes comic relationships between the things and the sounds that are installed around the space. St Laurence's Church, Reading Sounds of Praise was a temporary installation inside the church exploring the community at St Laurence’s and their approach to living in faith together. The installation consisted of sound work made collaboratively The Reverend Chris Russell and a core group of young people from the parish. The work explored the unconventional environment of the refurbished St Laurence’s and the ways in which the community uses the space. Click on the images below for larger installation pictures:
